The film initially seemed to be a horror movie but later was revealed to be a black comedy. It is about bank clerk Donna (Alison Lohman) who inherits an old house from her aunt (Pamela Payton-Wright). Finding and reading her aunt's will, she discovers that the condition for receiving the inheritance is that Donna has to spend one night in the house alone. While there, she hears noises and believes it is her friend George (Tuc Watkins) playing jokes on her; they had both grown up in the house with their respective families. Donna's friend, who is a loan officer, comes over to help Donna move, but he falls victim to the curse. George wanders around the house whispering, "I'm here."Donna later discovers that her new home is haunted by an evil spirit that appears in many different forms (including that of her late aunt) to torment her. As time passes Donna tries to find a way out of the house before being attacked by this evil spirit. The main theme of the movie is greed, as Donna's motive for staying in the cursed house was only due to greed for money instead of love for family. In the end she realizes that her greed is what's driving her to stay or actually to die in the house.In January 2005, it was reported that Lawrence Bender would produce a script from Douglas Cook and Chad St. John, who had provided a treatment for Fox Searchlight Pictures and Relativity Media. Relativity also scheduled the film for release on December 16, 2005. However, Relativity announced in August 2005 that they would not be distributing the film. It was later announced that Grindstone Entertainment Group would distribute the film instead; Grindstone changed their name to Lionsgate Films in 2007. In late July 2007, it was announced that Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert would be producing the film. They had previously produced the "Evil Dead" trilogy and "Drag Me to Hell" was Raimi's first film since he directed the original "Spider-Man". Screenwriter Angela Bettis met with Sam Raimi and shared her vision of a woman experiencing intense personal pain while trying to save her soul from a vengeful spirit. According to Angela Bettis, Raimi wanted a more comedic approach to the plot, but after she argued for a serious tone, she got approval from him.Filming took place in Los Angeles, California from September 8 through November 1, 2007.
